Elmendorf Air Force Base, two miles from Anchorage, Alaska, is a post that has long been a key element of North America's strategic defense. A mere 44 miles across the Bering Strait lies what was once America's greatest enemy -- the former Soviet Union. Although what President Reagan called the "Evil Empire" has since collapsed, Alaska's resources (such as the Alaska Pipeline, which begins in Anchorage), residents and strategic location still must be protected.

Elmendorf's mission is to support and defend U.S. interests in the region and around the world by providing units ready with air power projection and a base meeting Pacific Command's theater staging and requirements. The base also periodically deploys aircraft and crews to Galena and King Salmon airports to support the North American Aerospace Defense Command Region Mission. Aircraft at Elmendorf stand alert 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

For those looking for fun and exercise Elmendorf provides enlisted and officers clubs, bowling lanes, library, movies, wildlife museum, golf course, ski area, aero club and bike trails. Being stationed in Alaska provides a lot of activities such as skiing, sledding and dogsledding, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and swimming. There also are a variety of art organizations, performing arts productions, symphonies, operas and museums.
